The 1980 lateral blast was the first recorded in history. It created a horseshoe-shaped crater 2 km wide. The debris avalanche was the largest in recorded history. Spirit Lake was displaced and raised 60 meters. The Pumice Plain became a living laboratory for ecological succession.
