About El Chichon
The 1982 eruption killed 2,000+ people and was the deadliest volcanic disaster in Mexico. It ejected 7 million tonnes of sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere causing measurable global cooling. It was not considered a major volcanic hazard before 1982. The eruption created a 1 km wide crater lake.
