About Katmai
The 1912 Novarupta eruption was the largest of the 20th century, 3x larger than Pinatubo. It occurred at Novarupta but drained magma from beneath Mount Katmai creating a 4 km wide caldera. The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes formed from ash flows. Established as a National Monument in 1918.
