Etna has 4 summit craters each with distinct behavior. It produces both explosive and effusive eruptions. In 2021 it produced over 50 paroxysmal episodes. It has grown 30 meters taller since 2021 from accumulated deposits. Catania airport regularly closes due to ash. Its lava caves are among the longest in the world. Before the 1902 eruption Saint-Pierre was the Paris of the Caribbean.
