About Chaiten
Stunned volcanologists in 2008 when it erupted after approximately 9,400 years of dormancy. The eruption forced evacuation of the town of Chaiten. It produced a spectacular ash column and lava dome. It demonstrated that supposedly extinct volcanoes can reactivate.
